JOIN US AT TAIZÉ

After years of enjoying Taizé while visiting a small church in the Caribbean, Philip Ladd brought this informal, meditative service to Islesboro.  Taizé at Christ Church has become increasingly popular over the past three summers, with a growing gathering of both summer and year-round residents.  There will be four Taizé services at Christ Church this summer, and all are invited to attend, regardless of faith.  Mark your calendars for June 23, July 21, August 12, September 9 from 5:00-5:30pm.  It’s free and attire is casual.

Taizé (pronounced teh-ZAY) was founded in 1940 at the monastic community of Taizé in Burgundy, France, which helped shelter refugees trying to escape persecution during World War II.  Nearly ninety years later, thousands of people of all ages now come together regularly at Taizé contemplative services around the globe.

Taizé isn’t a religious service — it’s a time for reflection.  Simply sit in silence and immerse yourself in quiet reflection, soothed by candlelight and a selection of meditative songs and chants that are set to simple, beautiful melodies.  These musical selections are designed to help you turn off your mind and think quietly, clearly, and with intention.  They are almost like meditative mantras meant to help you settle your thoughts.  If prayer is the way you find peace of mind in stressful times, then Taizé helps you focus your most personal prayer intentions.  Or, use the time to think about the people and things that make you most grateful.

People come solo or in small groups, enjoying a respite from busy days and overloaded minds.  You are alone with your thoughts, yet there is something reassuring about being together with a supportive community, especially in tough times.

At the end of 30 minutes you can hopefully feel a shift in the load you are carrying and a lightness to your step.  You’ve stopped fretting about ferry lines and daily anxieties, and are instead rooted in the moment and focused on the things that matter most.

Taizé is free to all and starts promptly at 5:00pm.  People enter and leave the church in silence.  Attire is ‘come as you are’.

We warmly invite you to take some time for yourself this summer and join us at Taizé.

Four Taizé services are scheduled at Christ Church this summer:  June 23, July 21, August 12 and September 9.
